Chiropractic Massage!

Chiropractic Massage!

The longstanding indifference of the professional medical community toward chiropractic care is undergoing some remarkable changes.  The indifference is slowly giving way to the acceptance of alternative treatments as the concept of holistic healing is embraced by the world of professional medicine.  Subject material is being addressed that is lifting the veil on the concept of total healing.  What is so remarkable is that physicians are writing these articles.  It is no coincidence that they speak the language of the chiropractor.

One such article, the “Wisdom of the Body” written by a Dr. Zajicek observes the following:  “Modern medicine still fails to explain processes that operate in self-healing diseases.  We may thus distinguish between two kinds of processes that operate in the body:  explained and unexplained.  The latter operate in self-healing diseases and are either ignored by medicine or called placebos.  The unexplained processes in physiology were defined by Starling and Cannon as the Wisdom of the Body.  The Wisdom of the Body is an attribute of live organisms.  It directs growing plants toward the sunshine, guides amoebas away from noxious agents and determines the behavior of higher animals.  It is essential for individual survival and was molded by natural selection.  During evolution the Wisdom of the Body encountered all diseases, knows how to heal itself and anticipates all diseases.  The main task of the Wisdom of the Body is to maintain health and improve its quality.  It controls processes in the body so as to make them healthier.  The Wisdom of the Body has its own language and should be considered when examining patients.”  In other words, the human body has its own formal operative:  health and well being.

The gentleman considered to be the founder of modern chiropractic; DD Palmer made a similar observation well in advance of Dr. Zajicek’s article.  He said:  “That which I named Innate is a segment of that Intelligence which fills the Universe.  This portion of the whole never sleeps nor tires, recognizes neither darkness nor distance, is not subject to material laws, bodily wants are not essential, substantial conditions are not needed for its existence.  It continues to care for and direct the organic functions of the body as long as the soul holds the body and spirit together.”

The chiropractic profession has long believed that the body is more than capable of healing itself and its operational directive is to assist the body to do just that.  The medical community is finally coming to terms with the principles that have been recognized and practiced by chiropractors for the past one hundred years.

Chiropractors Treat Headaches As Well

Headache Relief!

Headache Relief!

There are several kinds of headaches.  However, the most common type of headache is the tension headache.  This type of headache represents more than seventy-five percent of all headaches.  The pain associated with a tension headache is frequently described as a dull ache surrounding the head or behind the eyes.  For some people the pain is felt all the way down the back of the head and into the neck and shoulders.  This type of headache comes on rather slowly and can be of a short or extended period of time. These kinds of headaches tend to approach rather slowly and gather momentum as the taught musculature continues to pull on the back of the head.  They can last from relatively short periods of time to as long as several days.

The physiological cause of these kinds of headaches involves what is called subluxations in the upper back and the neck.  A misalignment in the top cervical vertebrae triggers a small muscle to spasm.  This in and of itself is not especially problematic but for the fact that the muscle, the RCPM has a tendon that connects to the dura mater.  This dura mater tissue surrounds the brain and is very sensitive to pain.  As the muscle spasms it pulls on the tendon connected to this tissue and the result is a headache.  This sequence of events is frequently associated with acute tension and stress from our daily activities.  The muscles of the upper back, shoulders and specifically the neck begin to contract and tighten.  When in full “bloom” the physical tightness of these muscles that connect the head to the back at the shoulders can easily be felt.  After a prolonged period of time they too will become sore and achy.

There is a significant body of evidence that indicates the adjustments made by chiropractors are highly effective in the treatment of tension headaches and especially those that have their origin in the cervical or neck area of the spine.  Spinal manipulation provides immediate relief to the affected area and there is a added benefit to such manipulation.  There are far fewer side effects from such manipulation than the frequently proscribed medications.

Every person’s physiology and condition is unique and a proper evaluation by a trained chiropractor should preclude any diagnosis or treatment.  Nonetheless, chiropractors are receiving more and more patients as a viable alternative to the standard routine of medicating an ailment.
