Love Running!

For many active folks, running is not simply an enjoyable pastime but a regular routine.  It not only provides the exhilaration of keeping the body in great shape but also provides an opportunity to clear the mind and prepare for the day at hand.  Although frequently ignored, planning is an essential aspect of running.  Any chiropractor will most likely recommend the following guidelines for an effective and beneficial run that will prevent long lasting injuries.

1. Your feet are the anatomy that is “hitting the pavement.” What you put on them is important.  In today’s highly specialized world, footwear is now designed for specific and specialized activities.  The days of donning the tennis shoes or sneakers” should be long gone.  Chiropractors will advise you that how the foot is enclosed ultimately affects the leg bones and the spine.  What is surrounding the feet is very important to the body’s structure.

2. Keep your arms in motion while running and do so in rhythm with the opposite leg. Runners with experience recognize that this synchronized movement transfers body weight properly.

3. You don’t drive your car on bald tires. Chiropractors advise against extending the usable life of your running shoes with duct tape and assorted adhesives.  As the soles of the running shoes wear down they need replacing.  A worn shoe does not provide adequate cradling of your foot.  Those same worn down soles also do not allow proper walking posture.

4. Chiropractors strongly argue against the use of strap-on weights on the ankle or the wrist of the runner. This advice comes directly from the incredible number of injuries that Chiropractors treat as a result of this practice.  The reason for this is that the added weight changes the balance of the body.  As the body attempts to adjust for this imbalance, the spine and neck can be easily injured.  If the running enthusiast wants to provide the added resistance, he or she should do so during a workout but not when they are running.

5. Always look ahead of yourself when you run rather than looking down at the ground. Obstructions can be easily seen in advance of your path.   Looking down places added stress on the curve of the neck and adds significantly to the potential for back and neck pain as well a host of related conditions that are not desired.

Chiropractors are a great source of beneficial advice on running.  The runner who follows this advice will avoid of host of injuries and add a host of benefits to their efforts.
